Doechii's on Top of the World

We’re only three months into 2025 and it’s already Doechii’s year, with no plans of slowing down. Plus Lady Gaga on SNL, Blake Lively vs Anna Kendrick at SXSW, and more

Despite daylight savings time, March seems to be the month that’s bringing us the sunshine in the pop culture space as well! Starting the month with a Lady Gaga album, a new Chappell Roan single this week, and ending the month with Ariana Grande’s ‘eternal sunshine’ deluxe!? The pop girls are saving 2025, what else is new?

I had such a fabulous time at the Traitor’s event on Sunday night that I told you about in this weekend’s newsletter - I learned so many fun BTS tidbits that I shared on Instagram if you’re interested in hearing about what goes on in the castle when the cameras aren’t rolling (or what they cut like a 15-minute argument between Dolores and Tom that lead to them voting for each other at the round table).

The woman of the hour for this week’s podcast is no other than Doechii. Ironically enough, she was also the woman of the weekend in my newsletter, but I can’t help it - she’s killing the game.

Billboard names Doechii their 2025 Woman of the Year

I’ve been claiming 2025 to be Doechii’s year since she landed at #6 on my Top Albums of 2024, so I’m thrilled to see Billboard is on board with this too. Earlier this week they announced that the Swamp Princess will be honored with Woman of the Year at their annual Women in Music ceremony later this month.

“Doechii is taking pop culture by storm, this year becoming the third woman in history to win a Grammy for best rap album, and dazzling fans of every musical genre with her breathtaking performances, ultra-candid lyrics, and utterly unique sound, style, and spirit…We are thrilled to celebrate Doechii and cheer on her continued success.”

She previously won the Rising Star Award in 2023, which looking at her growth from then to now I’d say is a complete understatement.

In addition to being named Woman of the Year only three months into the year, she got arguably the biggest stamp of approval in the rap world: performing with Miss Lauryn Hill. I don’t know what’s crazier - Miss Lauryn Hill showing up for this event or her bringing Doechii out (I kid).

On Saturday night, during her Jazz in the Gardens performance in Miami, Miss Lauryn Hill introduced the most recent and third woman to win Best Rap Album Grammy winner as “a sister”, followed by the duo performing Doo Wap (That Thing) together. The first woman to win Best Rap Album and the most recent winner performing together? Now that’s what being Too Pop to Handle is all about.

On top of all of that, Doechii is also the current face of Nike because, duh. The brand shared a Reel of the artist reading a CVS-length receipt of all her accomplishments once again reminding us that she is the moment.

The moral of the story: it’s Doechii’s world and we’re just living in it.

Lady Gaga hosts and performs on SNL

What better way to celebrate your 7th studio album than stepping in for double-duty SNL for a second time!? My main takeaway from all of the press Gaga’s been doing is that she seems so genuinely happy and is in such a fabulous place with her artistry. Next to her unbelievable performance, I thought her monologue was the highlight of the show. It perfectly introduced us to who Gaga is today and where she’s at in her career. She can poke fun at her past eras and mistakes (performing with R. Kelly, The Joker 2, etc..) while reminding us that, above anything, she’s an artist. Her performances of Abracadabra and Killah (my favorite on the album) perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Mayhem - finding joy through the chaos. Also, an honorable mention to the ‘Birthday at Friendly’s’ skit that had me cackling more and more as I watched.

Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick spark feud rumors (again) at SXSW

Is Blake Lively going to make headlines with every co-star she has going forward!? During the premiere of their movie Another Simple Favor, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively couldn’t have had different responses to how it felt to work with each other again. Blake gave a polished “It's the best!” while Anna responded, “Oh, you know” - yikes!

If you’re unaware of the lore, here’s the TLDR: in 2018, rumors started flying about the two of them hating each other while filming A Simple Favor after a series of uncomfortable interviews. They brushed it under the rug until 2021 when a member of the crew went on the Celebrity Memoir Book Club podcast and aired out the fact that they hated each other. Of course, when the sequel was announced, we all began wondering why they would do a second movie together if the first time was so miserable!? In my eyes, I see it as these two just having polar opposite personalities and not meshing well in an interview setting, add a lawsuit as big as Blake/Justin on top of it and Anna wants nothing to do with it. I can’t say I blame her!

Wendy Williams scores a perfect 10 on her competency test

Any good news regarding Wendy Williams will be celebrated on this podcast! Earlier this week, she was taken to a hospital for a competency test to prove that the conservatorship she’s in is complete BS - and she passed with flying colors! Scoring a perfect 10/10, this test could be huge in her case against her current caregiver. She’s also scheduled to appear on The View this week which will be her first TV appearance in years. Needless to say, I’ll be sat for this interview and hoping for some good news to come out of it. #FREEWENDY
